About DAF

  • DAF Trucks is one of the most successful truck manufacturers. They produce trucks from 7.5t to 40t. DAF offers products with the highest technical standards. DAF also produces components for other companies from axles to engines.
  • They work with the "built-to-order" system. That means producing a truck as soon as the customer orders it. The advantage is that the truck is perfectly customized for the customer which keeps all of their clients happy.
  • The company produces a total of 202 trucks per day, ensuring that orders are arriving with their clients on time. They employ 8600 people in Eindhoven and Westerlo, they also believe that skills are just as important as experience. They currently don't have an apprenticeship scheme but they do hire interns.
  • Only 4% of the companies workers are female but this is continuously growing. Women are often found in Human Resources rather than factory work, whilst we were on our tour we saw very few women inside the production hall.
  • DAF are known greatly for their comfort and are known to have the comfiest beds in their trucks.
DAF trucks started as a trailer manufacturer, WWII then hit and was extremely useful for DAF as they helped to rebuild the Netherlands by producing trailers to transport stuff, making them huge amounts of profit.
Once the recession hit the profit that DAF were making went greatly downhill, however the business then bagan to make  larger amounts of trucks after the recession. They were greatly affected by this.
The business has went global due to its connection with the UK, the USA and Poland. These countries contribute greatly to DAFs profits and their connection has just grew and grew, making DAF a well known company in these places. In the meantime they also produced a car, known for it's special gearbox, that made the car able to go backwards as fast as forwards.
DAF continues to develop more concepts. They have currently introduced the idea of the 'EcoTwin', trucks which are wifi connected to drive within 0.3sec behind each other. These are useful as they take up less space on the road and reduce fuel consumption by 10%,  making it more eco friendly. This concept allows the second truck to be driven automatically, so the driver essentially doesn't have to do anything; when one lorrie brakes, the other does too. There's a vaccum on the first truck so the second is aerodynamic optimised while driving behind.
